Career Path: ECG / EKG Monitor Technician

The journey from student to healthcare professional involves three distinct phases: Education, Certification, and Employment. This program is designed to guide you through each stage by providing the foundational knowledge required for entry-level roles in cardiac monitoring.

Phase 1: Specialized Training

The first step is the successful completion of the Professional ECG Monitor Technician program.

• Core Competencies: You will master cardiac anatomy, electrophysiology, lead placement, and the interpretation of over 30 distinct heart rhythms.

• Regulation Note: Successful completion of this course results in a Certificate of Completion from Stonecrest Health. This certificate verifies that you have met the institutional requirements for training.

Phase 2: National Certification

Many ECG/EKG Technicians eventually earn their national certification after gaining employment first. Job postings that read “NHA certification or willing to become NHA certified upon hire” indicate a prospective employee gain the experience of 10 required Live EKGs when employed. Combined with this course, the candidate can then sit for their NHA CET Certification. While most states do not currently require a state license for ECG technicians, some healthcare employers require National Certification as a condition of hire.

For students looking for eventual employment as a Cardiac Monitor Technician, the path is a little more straight forward. Completion of a course that covers cardiac rhythms and arrhythmias is generally suitable in many states, while National Certification is an option that makes a job candidate more attractive to potential employers.

1. CET (Certified EKG Technician): Administered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). This requires a high school diploma and the successful performance of 10 live EKGs.
